Born and raised in Howard Beach NY, located next to a hidden oasis in Queens called Jamaica bay. Daughter of a yacht club member, and boater since birth, I quickly found a love of the water, nature, the ability to explore it, and the passion to preserve it. As a little girl swimming to the beach via boat and picking up garbage with my neighbor. Cutting up 6pk can plastic rings and filling in the holes we dug up so the marina life wouldn't get trapped. The respect for our environment and our ecosystem has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. -Deidra D.
Jamaica Bay is the largest open space in New York and home of a bird sanctuary called Gateways National Park which shelters more wildlife than the Adirondacks or the Catskills. "The bay is equivalent of 3 Central parks, 3 Prospect parks, and 3 Courtland parks combine." -Michael Bloomberg. In addition to its beauty Jamaica bay is also known for more than a century of where New Yorker's dumped their undesirables. Surrounded by 3 inactive landfills leaking garbage, abandoned boats, sewage, factors to smell for miles, and marshes favored by the mob. With all these factors combine, the once beautiful oasis called Jamaica bay has become an epic erosion of marsh lands and a devastatingly polluted oasis.
A collaboration with Greenpeace and a goal to decrease pollution by eliminating the production of one time use plastics all together. Were producing more one time use plastics than ever before and recycling schemes are failing to keep up. Plastic pollution is quickly transforming our ocean into a large dump of wastes.
It is time to turn the tide on plastic polluters and environmental destruction. The break free from plastic movement, is calling on local communities said Dr. Sandra Schöttner, Oceans & Plastics Campaigner, Greenpeace Germany "Producing and using absurd amounts of single-use plastics day after day is clearly devastating for our oceans. The only solution is to stop this practice by developing alternative delivery models. We will never be able to recycle our way out of this crisis. Both governments and companies have to start phasing out the worst single-use plastics".
